Volunteer opportunity description

The Chicago Cares Serve-a-thon is Chicago's largest annual day of service, and we welcome you to join us!

On Saturday, June 9, nearly 6,000 volunteers will come together to complete projects that focus entirely on improving Chicago Public Schools - we'll be painting, planting, cleaning, organizing, and building at dozens of schools. Serve-a-thon volunteers will make a difference in the lives of more than 18,000 schoolchildren in just one day!

Serve-a-thon is also Chicago Cares' most important annual fundraiser. Serve-a-thon is like a walk-a-thon, but instead of walking, you'll be serving the community. You'll collect pledges that will go to support Chicago Cares' programs. We manage more than 200 monthly programs that focus on education for children and adults, hunger, health and wellness, senior services, and the environment. Your fundraising efforts will ensure our programs continue to be a success.

Serve-a-thon check-in will begin at 8 am at Serve-a-thon Plaza (location to be announced soon!). Volunteers will board buses to their service projects before 9 am, and there will be a lunch break at each project. After the work is completed, buses will return volunteers to Serve-a-thon Plaza for a celebration with free food, drinks, and live entertainment from 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm.

Serve-a-thon is for EVERYONE! Come with your company, your community group, your church, your social club, your family, your friends, or by yourself.

Register for Serve-a-thon by visiting If you have any questions, e-mail or call 312.780.0800 x 163.

There is no training required -- just a desire to help and to have fun! -- but participants must pre-register, so we can accurately assign projects and supplies (walk-ons cannot be accommodated).

Volunteers must be at least 12 years old, and those 12-16 years old must be accompanied by an adult at a one-to-one ratio.

Serve-a-thon will take place rain or shine (projects will be completed indoors in the event of inclement weather).

Volunteers should wear clothes that they don't mind getting dirty.
