Volunteer opportunity description

While our volunteer tutors come to Literacy Chicago to help others, they invariably realize that they gain as much from the experience as their students. Tutors are required to complete a state-mandated training workshop that takes place over two consecutive Saturdays.

Once a tutor is matched with a student, they create a plan of action to address the student’s specific needs and interests. This can include help with general reading, English language and acculturation, or more task-oriented activities. To maintain continuity in learning, we request a commitment of a minimum of nine months.

In order to fulfill our obligations for funding by the State of Illinois, tutors are asked to submit monthly time sheets. Literacy Chicago increasingly relies on classroom tutors who work directly with our instructors to assist in various ways, including help with teaching key subjects and facilitating level-based conversation groups.

Literacy Chicago continues to grow by adding off-site classes located in targeted communities. We are currently seeking tutors who are interested in traveling to these Chicago-area neighborhoods where the need for our services is critical.

Tutors must complete a 12 hour training and apply directly to June Porter.
