Chicago: Purchase Back to School Kits for CPS Kids on Groupon

CHICAGO—Chicago Public Schools and Groupon ( announce the launch of a G-Team ( deal that will allow Chicagoans to purchase school supply kits for CPS low-income students.

The Kits for Kidz campaign will be available through Groupon’s daily email and on beginning on Tuesday, July 26th and running through Thursday, July 28th. Residents will have the option to pledge support in increments of $12, which each provide one pre-made school supply kit for a CPS student.

Partner organizations and CPS will distribute kits at neighborhood festivals and Back to School events. More than 85 percent of CPS students come from low-income families and more than 15,000 CPS students are homeless, making these kits a vital part of helping our students get ready for school on the first day.

“Everyone should be a partner in our efforts to get our kids into school on the first day and prepared for the classroom. By providing students with a year’s worth of school supplies, Chicagoans can help a child come to school ready to learn,” CPS CEO Jean-Claude Brizard said. “We are grateful for Groupon’s support that has given this effort the kind of visibility only Groupon can provide.”

Brizard handed out more than 100 Kits for Kidz to students at the CPS Back to School Kickoff last Wednesday in Harris Park, located in Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood. One-hundred percent of the G-Team campaign proceeds will be used to provide school supplies to additional CPS students with Kits for Kidz.

The G-Team partnership is part of the CPS Back to School Campaign’s grassroots approach which aims to mobilize citywide and community based partners to get the word out through a two week blitz prior to the two school start days - Early Start Schools (Track E) begin on Monday, August 8th and Regular Start Schools (Track R) begin on Tuesday, September 6th.
